Each year, countless young adults “age out” of the child welfare system. Considered too old for state support, they are often too young to be on their own. Without the resources and supports required to succeed, these youth are often thrown into the world of adult homelessness and have experienced legal issues, addiction and mental illness.
Liberty Village helps them head in a better direction.
The Home for Little Wanderers’ Liberty Village is a 16-bed facility in Roxbury, Massachusetts that provides temporary housing, support, and trauma-informed care for young adults ages 18 to 25. A crucial alternative to chronic homelessness, Liberty Village provides a safe, stable environment where at-risk youth can think beyond immediate challenges – like where to sleep or how to find food – and build hopeful futures.
Residents of Liberty Village are provided with a short-term intensive treatment plan and ongoing case management support. The staff assists with both clinical and life skill challenges, such as signing up for health insurance, getting a driver’s license, searching for employment, and ultimately, finding a new place to call home.
Liberty Village is the vision of three partners: The City of Boston, Liberty Mutual, and The Home for Little Wanderers. The program was created to help young adults capitalize on the resources of The Home and the community to build future pathways while searching for long-term housing. True to its name, Liberty Village is a place where older at-risk youth can begin building independent lives.
